Why Make Homemade Soap?
68
For many of us, making our own soap at home brings up images of early settlers working around a big iron kettle, and concerns about the safety of lye.
Why would anyone make homemade soap when there are plenty of worthwhile soaps at the store? The popular conception of soapmaking is a smelly, dangerous, difficult process, but that's not really true.
While soap used to be made in huge batches outdoors, it can just as easily be made in small amounts on your stovetop, in your blender, or in your microwave. The ingredients don't have an unpleasant odor (smelly soapmaking comes from badly rendered animal fat - most of us won't be rendering our own drippings!) and while lye is hazardous, it's not as bad as you may have heard. Soapmaking at home can actually be a very pleasant process. For those who aren't quite ready to make their soap from scratch, there are premade melt and pour bars that can be scented and colored at home. These can often be ordered online from specialty stores, or found in your local craft shop.
When you make homemade soap, you control what goes into it and what doesn't. For those of us with allergies and chemical sensitivities, this is a real benefit. After all, commercial soaps tend to use a lot of synthetics and materials that can cause irritation in sensitive people. Even if you don't have a chemical sensitivity, making your own soap has benefits. You can produce a bar that's completely unique, and higher quality than you'd be able to buy commercially, for a lot less money.
There's a huge range of variations in homemade soap. Olive oil, or castile soaps are popular, as are coconut oil soaps. Milk is a common additive that helps make skin softer, and there are all kinds of scents, coloring agents, and natural materials you can include in your soap. Sweet vanilla and cinnamon scented soaps, floral soaps with real flowers in them and musky tones are all possibilities. Let your imagination run wild - you'll make some beautiful soaps.
Use them at home for a little luxury each time you shower or wash your hands, or give them as beautiful gifts. Handmade soaps are beautiful Christmas and birthday presents, and they show more personal investment than a purchased gift. You can make more than just bar soap, too. Molded mini-soaps, liquid soap and many other options are available. Take some time to experiment with them after you've gotten used to a basic recipe, and see how different homemade soaps can be from commercial ones.

I love to make homemade soap and have been doing it for y ears. While it isn't cheap at about $2.40 a bar, there is nothing like it. And it's so much fun!
