Hemp In The Fashion Industry
The production of Hemp clothing is a great alternative to other more common products that contain many toxins and chemicals.
The fashion industry is seeing a boom in the production of hemp threads for the fashionable and green. Celebrities like Christina Aguilera, Toni Collette, Milla Jovovich, Usher, Jill Hennessy are wrapping their babies in "Cute Tooshies" made from hemp and bamboo. Whether it's used alone or in conjunction with other fibers, hemp is safer for the planet and human kind. Hemp is the new vogue and it's looking good!
Fact #1
The fabric industry is one of the world's largest contributer to pollution.
It's no secret that most fibers today are drenched in a stew of chemical sludge. Formaldehyde, chromium, DBE's, dioxins and disperse dyes all contribute to the genetic makeup of finished textile products and if that's not enough to raise an eyebrow, millions of workers across the globe are exposed to these toxins on a daily basis, all for the sake of a comfy tee. Isn't that a good enough reason to delve deeper into what we are buying and consider hemp as a natural alternative?
I can go on and on about who pays the ultimate sacrifice for our runway modes, but the bottom line is, we live and breath a materialistic nation, so rather than justify the usefullness of hemp and other natural, organic fibers for the sake of the precious Eco-systems, the 10 year old child who has forsaken his childhood for the mighty dollar, the global warming crisis and so on and so forth, I will give you the brunt of not what hemp can do for thy neighbour but what it can do for thee.
Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L) is a very hearty plant capable of producing thousands of textiles. Although not as soft as cotton, it needs no pesticides, fungicides or insecticides to thrive and flourish, which means no toxic leftovers touching your skin. It absorbs more carbon dioxide than trees and even pulls in nuclear toxins from the ground.
In fact, it doesn't even require heavy labor because of it's own ability to ward off the weeds. From seed to maturation in only 120 days and you can be wearing hemp clothing that will last longer than the competition. It is super absorbent and succumbs to ultra violet light, unlike others. So, your clothes won't fade as quickly, saving you money in the long run.
Fact #2
Hemp fibers are 3 times stronger than cotton
Hemp fibers can be used in stylish carpets, necklaces, purses, and so much more. It proves to be highly resistant to mold, mildew, and rot, safe guarding living spaces that implement products using the plants materials. When it is time to throw out the old, hemp will also biodegrade faster when compared to any of the other common products on the market.
Fact #3
Deaths Annually in the U.S.
Alcohol 85,000
Prescription Drugs 32,000
Illicit Drug Use 17,000
Anti-Inflammatory Drugs 7,600
Marijuana 0
Does hemp carry a bad reputation without just cause?
That's a very real possibility. Perhaps, that bad reputation comes with a lack of information on the plant and its' positive attributes. We fear what we don't understand.
The common misconception is that Hemp production would encourage drug use. The plant, while in the same family as marijuana, is incapable of producing the level of THC that marijuana contains, which can be up to 20% or more, depending on the variety. Hemp is not a drug, but pure in its purpose.
A Natural Environmental Protector
When you hold just the few details mentioned in this article and put it up against the alternatives, the lesser of evils is obvious.
